Job summary

A.P. Webb Plant Hire, Hire Desk Controllers report to the Operations Director and are the key point of contact between the customer, the machines, operators and fitters as they are organised and sent out to hire.

A Hire Desk Controller Apprenticeship will lead to in depth technical product knowledge including machine compliance, understanding of safe plant operating systems, safe lift planning, familiarity with the hire process including the legal and financial complexities of hire operations, understanding of operator competency and health, safety and environmental considerations.

Role and responsibilities

An Apprentice Hire Desk Controller’s business as usual will include:

  • Process requisitions, orders and on-hire and off-hires, ensuring all legal, health & safety requirements have been met.
  • Carry out health, safety and environmental checks to ensure the staff and equipment meets the needs of the client.
  • Complete contract documentation for on-hire and off-hires.
  • Arrange the timely delivery and collection of equipment, considering vehicle type, site accessibility and health & safety requirements.
  • Follow organisational processes in relation to hire insurance and hire equipment damage, theft and loss.
  • Convey transport requirements including locations, delivery times and potential restrictions to drivers.
  • Organise the replacement and recovery of defective equipment.
  • Ensure all operator licences and site cards are current and valid for the operation and liaise with the contractor to provide such evidence.
  • Provide, explain and process hire rates and associated transactions e.g. daily rate, insurance excess, damage charges.

Qualifications and education requirements

GCSES English, Maths and ICT to grade 4,5,6 (C) or above are desirable however not essential as Functional Skills are offered as part of the Apprenticeship Framework.

Additional notes

You will be expected to attend college for 3 years and achieve at least a level three qualification.
